Attorney Henry E. Reaves, III Esquire, Inspires Resilience at McFarland Community Center

By: Lennard James

Attorney Henry E. Reaves, III, Esq. recently spoke at the McFarland Community Center for the Neighborhood Law School event, where he shared his personal journey to becoming a successful lawyer and entrepreneur. His message to the audience was clear: perseverance, resilience, and tenacity are essential to overcoming life’s challenges and achieving your dreams.

Henry E. Reaves, III Esquire, a Memphis native, connected deeply with the local audience, speaking not just as a professional but as someone who has faced the same struggle many people in the community deal with. Growing up in a neighborhood where success stories were few and far between, Reaves vividly remembers the excitement of getting his first job offer as an attorney, a milestone that seemed almost unimaginable at the time.

“I remember when I got my first job offer as an attorney, and it came with a salary of $70,000 a year,” Reaves recalled. “That kind of money was unheard of in my family or my neighborhood. I was so excited, but it was just the beginning of a journey that would have its ups and downs.”

The Unplanned Path to Starting His Own Law Firm

Henry E. Reaves, III, Esq candidly shared that his path to becoming a lawyer and starting his own firm wasn’t something he had meticulously planned. Instead, there were a series of setbacks and closed doors that eventually led him to entrepreneurship. After completing law school, Henry E. Reaves, III, Esq, did what most graduates do—he applied for jobs, sent out resumes, and went through the interview process. However, unlike most graduates, his journey took an unexpected turn.

“I remember applying for jobs, sending out resumes, and going through the process just like everyone else. One day, I got a letter saying I was invited to a second and final interview for a law firm in Memphis,” Reaves said. “The funny part is, I never even had a first interview. It was as if life was pushing me in a direction I hadn’t anticipated.”

Despite landing that interview, Henry E. Reaves, III, Esq, soon found himself facing more closed doors. Many of the firms he applied to didn’t hire him, leaving him in a position where he had to consider alternative paths. He explored different career options, including teaching and even attending job fairs for companies like FedEx. At one point, Reaves considered selling popcorn at sporting events just to make ends meet.

“I was an active lawyer, but nothing was working out. I even went to a job fair in the rain for four hours, just trying to figure out a way forward,” Reaves explained. “It felt like every door kept closing, one after another.”

The turning point for Henry E. Reaves, III, Esq, came when he realized that the setbacks were not meant to stop him but to redirect him toward something greater. Instead of giving up, he decided to take matters into his own hands and started his own law firm. While the journey wasn’t easy, it was one that taught him the importance of persistence.

“I didn’t have this grand ambition to start my own law firm,” Reaves admitted. “I just didn’t want to be on the defense anymore. The more doors that closed, the more I felt like I needed to create my own opportunity.”

Reaves emphasized the importance of resilience and determination during his talk at McFarland Community Center. He spoke passionately about how setbacks are a part of life, whether you’re trying to be an attorney, a chef, an actor, or anything else.

“I wish I could sit up here and tell you that I had it all planned out, but that’s not my story,” Reaves told the audience. “What I did have, though, was the mindset that no matter what happened, I wasn’t going to give up. That type of mentality will help you no matter what field you’re in. You’re going to have setbacks, you’re going to get punched in the face by life, but if you set your mind on your goal and refuse to quit, you’ll get there.”

A Message for Future Leaders

Reaves’ story resonated with the crowd, many of whom had experienced similar challenges in their own lives. He encouraged attendees to adopt a tenacious mindset and to understand that obstacles are a natural part of the journey to success. For Reaves, those early struggles not only shaped him as a lawyer but also as a person, making him more determined to give back to the community that raised him.

As he closed his speech, Henry E. Reaves, III, Esq reminded everyone that success isn’t about having perfect plans but about staying committed to your goals, even when the road gets tough.

“Success is not a straight line,” Reaves said. “It’s about having the resilience to keep moving forward, no matter how many times you get knocked down. If you stay focused and keep pushing, you will reach your goal.”

Attorney Henry E. Reaves III’s words resonated with the audience at McFarland Community Center, leaving a meaningful impression and inspiring them to embrace their own challenges and to keep striving toward their dreams, no matter what obstacles are in their way. The 1% Rule: How Incremental Improvements Can Transform Your Life

Big changes often feel overwhelming. Whether it’s trying to get healthier, become more productive, or learn a new skill, the idea of overhauling your habits overnight can seem impossible. This is where the 1% rule comes into play. By focusing on small, consistent improvements each day, you can achieve significant transformations over time. The concept is simple yet powerful: small steps, when taken regularly, compound into remarkable progress.

What Is the 1% Rule?

The 1% rule is a philosophy that emphasizes making minor improvements on a consistent basis. Instead of aiming for immediate, dramatic changes, the goal is to focus on being just 1% better each day. While a 1% improvement may feel insignificant in the moment, its impact grows exponentially when compounded over time. This idea is often associated with compound growth in personal development, similar to how compound interest works in finance.

For example, improving by 1% daily for a year doesn’t result in being just 365% better. Because each improvement builds on the last, you end up being about 37 times better by the end of the year. On the other hand, a decline of 1% each day can quickly lead to stagnation or deterioration.

Why Small Improvements Work

Focusing on small, incremental changes works because it’s manageable and sustainable. When goals feel too large, they can lead to procrastination or burnout. However, making a minor adjustment, like drinking one extra glass of water or reading a single page of a book, feels achievable. Over time, these small actions become habits, and habits are the foundation of long-term change.

Small improvements also help build momentum. Success breeds confidence, and as you start to see progress, even in tiny increments, you’ll feel motivated to keep going. This positive feedback loop reinforces your commitment and helps you stay consistent.

How to Apply the 1% Rule

To make the 1% rule work for you, it’s important to approach it with intentionality and patience. Here are some steps to get started:

1. Define Your Goals
Identify the areas of your life where you want to see improvement. These could be related to health, career, relationships, or personal growth. Be specific about what you want to achieve.

2. Break It Down
Large goals can feel daunting, so break them into smaller, actionable steps. For instance, if your goal is to run a marathon, start by jogging for five minutes a day and gradually increase your distance.

3. Focus on Consistency
Consistency is more important than intensity. It’s better to do something small every day than to take on a massive task occasionally. Aim for progress, not perfection.

4. Track Your Progress
Keeping track of your daily improvements can help you stay accountable. Use a journal, app, or spreadsheet to log your efforts and reflect on how far you’ve come.

5. Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledge and celebrate your incremental progress. Recognizing your achievements, no matter how small, boosts motivation and reinforces the habit of improvement.

The Power of Compounding

The magic of the 1% rule lies in compounding. Just like saving a little money regularly can lead to significant financial growth, small daily improvements compound over time to produce remarkable results. This principle applies to various aspects of life:

  • Health: Adding a short walk to your routine each day can lead to better fitness and mental clarity over time.
  • Knowledge: Reading just one page of a book daily adds up to several books completed in a year.
  • Skills: Practicing a musical instrument for 10 minutes a day can lead to significant improvement in your abilities.

The compounding effect is subtle but powerful, and it’s often the key to achieving long-term success.

Overcoming Challenges

While the 1% rule is simple, it’s not always easy. Life can get in the way, and progress may feel slow. To stay on track:

  • Be Patient: Remember that meaningful change takes time. Trust the process and focus on consistent effort rather than immediate results.
  • Embrace Setbacks: Progress isn’t always linear. If you miss a day or experience a setback, don’t get discouraged. Pick up where you left off and keep moving forward.
  • Stay Focused: Avoid the temptation to compare your progress to others. Focus on your journey and celebrate your unique milestones.

The 1% rule is a powerful reminder that big changes don’t happen overnight. By committing to small, consistent improvements each day, you can create lasting transformations in your life. Whether it’s improving your health, advancing your career, or developing a new skill, the key is to start small, stay consistent, and trust in the power of compounding. Over time, those 1% gains add up to something extraordinary, proving that progress, no matter how small, is always worth pursuing.
