HireSmart Cares’ Most Inspiring Student Journeys: From Learning to Earning

Local Students Achieve Milestones in Trades, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Career Readiness with Support from HireSmart Cares

Madison County, GA., (August 22, 2024) – HireSmart Cares is proud to spotlight the inspiring journeys of four students who have successfully transitioned from learning to earning in their chosen fields, thanks to the organization’s support.

Peyton Sartain: Champion of Electrical Wiring

Peyton Sartain, a rising senior at Madison County High School, won the SkillsUSA state championship in electrical wiring. Sartain also claimed first-place titles at the state’s Northeast and Southeast regional competitions. In June, he competed at the national SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta, where he faced 41 other state champions.

Sartain’s journey from a student with a passion for electrical wiring to a national competitor was made possible with a $2,275 grant from HireSmart Cares. This funding covered his SkillsUSA registration and hotel costs. “Being able to win regionals built my confidence,” Sartain said. “By the time I got to nationals, I wasn’t nervous, even though it was a lot more serious.”

His skills have impressed employers and earned him recognition in the trades, which Sartain believes are crucial for the country’s infrastructure. “Trades are very important, but they don’t get paid as much as they deserve,” he said.

Devin Self: Future Leader in Poultry Science

Devin Self, a 2024 graduate of Madison County High School, is setting his sights on a future in poultry science. Recently, he attended the national FFA Leadership Conference in Washington D.C., thanks to a $1,375 grant from HireSmart Cares. The conference provided him with leadership training and networking opportunities.

Self’s passion for poultry began in high school and led him to national competitions with the FFA poultry judging team. “FFA at Madison County really helped me find my path and gave me the opportunity to explore my interests,” Self said.

He plans to pursue a degree in Poultry Science at the University of North Georgia and aspires to become a poultry vet or a small animal vet.

Westlynn Epps: Entrepreneurial Success

Westlynn Epps, a rising junior at Madison County High School, is making waves with her business, Works By Westlynn. Specializing in custom-designed earrings and T-shirts, Epps recently won the MadiCo Makers Student Entrepreneur Program’s Shark Tank competition. The victory, which came with a $1,500 grant from HireSmart Cares, will help her expand her business.

Epps balances her entrepreneurial endeavors with competitive swimming and plans to study nursing or sports therapy in college. “HireSmart Cares has been instrumental in helping me grow my business and pursue my dreams,” Epps said.

Christopher Wagnon: Welding into the Future

Christopher Wagnon, a 2024 Madison County High School graduate, has joined Caterpillar Inc., where he will continue his career in welding. Wagnon’s journey began with high school welding classes and internships. His recent success was supported by HireSmart Cares, which provided high-quality work boots for him and his classmates.

Wagnon’s early exposure to welding and hands-on experience through Madison County High School and Broad River College and Career Academy have set him on a promising career path. “Welding is enjoyable and has opened doors for me,” Wagnon said.
