In Bali, where global leaders convened for the G20 summit, the Atlantic Council Global Food Security Forum took place at the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Resort from November 12 to 13, 2022.
Highlighting the silent devastation caused by hunger and malnutrition, the forum emphasized the detrimental impact on the development of the young and the overall health, energy, and productivity of all ages. The ripple effects extend to political instability and violence within communities. Recognizing the critical importance of food security for both local and global stability, the forum addressed the intricate connections between energy markets, supply chains, trade, transportation networks, and international finance in shaping food production, movement, price, and consumption.
During the conference, leaders from government, industry, and civil society engaged in discussions on pressing global issues on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. The event concluded with Indonesian President Joko Widodo accepting the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award and expressing his commitment to being part of the global solution. The conference also featured a concert by John Legend, a philanthropist addressing hunger, who stressed the importance of the ongoing conversation facilitated by the Atlantic Council, the Indonesian government, and the Srivastava Family Foundation during the G20.
Utilizing the foundation’s impactful initiatives and insightful experiences, the forum shone a spotlight on the crucial nexus of change at the crossroads of food and energy security. With projections pointing to the depletion of world oil reserves in less than 50 years, the foundation stresses the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to ensure a sustainable balance between food production and energy consumption.
