The gap between the two nations in terms of AI performance is now narrower than ever. Since 2025, the U.S. and China have been trading places at the top of global AI benchmarks, with the difference between the top models often less than 3%.
While the U.S. still leads in private investment in AI, deploying $285.9 billion in 2025, China is catching up in areas like industrial robotics, patents, and academic publications. This shift in competition has moved away from raw “intelligence” toward a focus on cost, reliability, and supply-chain control. The report also notes that the number of AI researchers moving to the U.S. has dropped dramatically, by 89% since 2017, signaling a weakening of the U.S. as a global AI talent hub.
